Glaring voter gap intact despite Ford’s sweeping win

Mayor elect Rob Ford may have scored a big win for the city’s top job, but that doesn’t mean the brash penny-pincher is Toronto’s favourite son.

A ward-by-ward breakdown of last Monday’s election shows that a strong divide remains between downtown and suburban voters, with Smitherman dominating in the city’s 13 core ridings. Despite earlier polls indicating Ford was gaining steam amongst downtown voters, he was unable to defeat Smitherman in any of the core ridings. Ford won 31 of the 44 wards city-wide.

City Hall cooks up last minute decisions in final stretch

The proposed multi-level hockey facility will be built at the Donlands.

Toronto City Hall is buzzing just a week before the final council meeting of the term.

Several issues have come into the ring, including whether or not our new mayor deserves a $16,000 raise. The decision was postponed for the new council. They did, however, manage to vote unanimously in support of an $88 million multi-level waterfront hockey facility although it is unclear how the city will handle the $33 million short fall.

Guess who we bumped into…

Imelda Marcos, wife of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, attending a press conference for a major aesthetics company.

In the Philippines, you can still become a Congresswoman even if your dead husband was the dictator who set the tone for contemporary government corruption during his 20-year presidency in the ’70s.

We just happened to be in the financial district of Manila.
